The southern part of Rosemead is Rancho Potrero Grande (Great Pasture), originally granted to an Indian named Manuel Antonio, the mayor (warden) of the San Gabriel Mission. The area, now called RoseMead, was a land where fruit, vegetables, grain and livestock were grown. It is the site of one of the oldest farms in California and the largest ranch in Los Angeles County. This is rancho potrero grande (large pasture) and the home of an American by birth named Manuel Antonio, who was once the powerful ordinomos (overlords or overseers) of the Mission of San Gabriel.
